President Rosemary J. Powers Testifies to the Massachusetts’ Legislative Joint Committee on Education

Rosemary J. PowersOn July 17, 2023, President Rosemary J. Powers testified virtually to the Education Committee hearing on the renewal of the Universal School Lunch program, Bill H.603/S 261.

Initially implemented during Covid, the bill ensures that no matter what school a child attends – public, private, or religious - free breakfast and lunch will be provided, without the need for family documentation, a process that often results in students unable to access the federally funded programs due to language barriers and other obstacles. The renewal of Bill H.603/S 261 ensures that all students benefit from the Universal School Lunch program.

President Powers noted in her written text that most Cristo Rey families will qualify for the federally funded food program. Implementing the Universal School Lunch program removes the administrative burden on schools and allows staff resources to be used to ensure meals are nutritious, balanced, and culturally appropriate.
